Tax Deduction Donations

One of the unexpected perks of donating to true non-profit charities is possible tax deduction donations. While not everything and everyone qualifies for these tax deductions, many things and many people do. Some tax deductible donations include: clothes, food, goods, money, and even cars. While many people give out of the goodness of their hearts, tax deduction donations make giving that much more rewarding. In other words, even the government recognizes the value of your good will.

In this article, we'll cover the specifics on tax deduction donations relating specifically to cars. Smaller donations may be tax deductible too, but often the charities themselves have readily available information on how to claim all applicable deductions. These types of donations usually require little more than a receipt. Auto donations on the other hand have their own special tax form. Cars are a much larger issue and likewise carry a much larger value which can make getting the appropriate tax deduction somewhat tricky.

Prior to donating your car to charity, there are a few things you need to determine to ensure that you're eligible for tax deduction donations. The first two things are related exclusively to the charity you choose. First, you should choose a non-profit organization. This may seem obvious, but sadly there are some less than reputable for-profit companies that actually try to pass themselves off as charities, so the non-profit designation is especially critical. Second, you need to confirm that your charity of choice is classified as a 501(c)(3). This just further ensures that donations to the charity are tax deductible. Most charities that meet these two requirements will openly state that they accept tax deduction donations.

Now you need to consider the car in question. If your car is not running or needs considerable mechanical repairs, then it is quite likely that the charity you donate it to will simply sell it to raise money for other services. When this happens, the tax deduction that you can claim is determined by what the car actually sells for?not by the car's market value. Tax deduction donations of this type are usually cars valued at less than $500.

If you want to make tax deduction donations that reward the full market value of the car, then you need to give your car to a charity that will use the car itself. In other words, to get a deduction equal to market value, the car?and not money earned through the sale of the car?must be the final benefit of your donation. Organizations offering these kinds of deductions will distribute your car to those that need it most: down and out professionals, low income families, the disabled and even sometimes other charities for use as a business vehicle.

As long as they meet the non-profit guidelines outlined above, no matter who you donate your car to you know you've given it to a worthy cause. But on your end, choosing the charity wisely can result in tax deduction donations that are not only morally uplifting but financially smart too.
